Lleida - RectorateSituated 155 kilometres west of the city of Barcelona, to which it is linked by motorway, dual-carriageway, railway and bus, the city of Lleida is the capital of the Segrią county, and is the principal population, economic, cultural and service centre of the interior of Catalonia. With a population of around 120,000, its area of influence stretches over a wide territory whose population is triple that of the city, from the Pyrenees to the river Ebro, with strong historical and linguistic links to the neighbouring region of Aragon. Lleida, a traditionally agricultural city, centre of a very rich area of intensive farming and a fertile plain thanks to irrigation, in recent decades has also become an centre for industry - basically food and livestock industries- and services. Commerce has a long tradition and there is nowadays a wide range of offers.

The variety of landscapes (the Pre-Pyrenees and Pyrenees, the Plain of Lleida and the semiarid area of the southern counties) provides a range of territory that constitutes an incomparable natural laboratory, which also invites you on varied excursions, skiing, doing adventure sports, walking along the banks of the Segre, admiring the landscapes of the dry regions, or visiting unique terrains such as the wetland zones of La Mitjana, Utxesa, or the Bajo Cinca, or the extensive Oligocene and Miocene tabular formations, that covers practically all the south of the territory, and the alluvial material mainly linked to the courses of the Segre and the Ebro.

Seu VellaWithin an hour's drive you can also visit the Mesozoic formations of the area of Montsec, which constitute a outstanding centre of scientific and teaching attraction for its geological and palaeontologic interest. It is easy to get to know the outstanding features of the Catalan Romanesque, in the Vall de Boķ, declared Human Patrimony, or the Vall d'Aran. Closer by are the monasteries of Vallbona de les Monges, Santes Creus and Poblet (Route of the Cistercians), or the Seu Vella, a notable example of the gothic art in the city itself. Fishing is possible in the Segre and especially fishing for European catfish in the nearby Mequinenza reservoir.
